What is Klezmer?

Klezmer is the secular folk music of Eastern European (Ashkenazic) Jews. It is a vibrant, joyful style -- influenced both by other folk musics of the region and by music of the synagogue -- that was played at weddings and celebrations preceding WWII. Klezmer music nearly vanished in the aftermath of the Holocaust, but was rediscovered and revived by a dedicated scommunity of scholars and artists amidst broader American interest in folk & world music in the 1960s. Since then, it has continued to evolve and mix with other genres, particularly jazz, to develop a unique new sound that balances time-honored tradition with contemporary imagination and appeal.

Klezmer's accompanying dance style, known as "Yiddish Dance", consists mostly of communal circle dances guided by one or multiple leaders. Yiddish Dance posses a unique aesthetic and steps that are distinct from Israeli or Balkan circle dances

Do I have to be Jewish to attend an event?

Absolutely not! All who enjoy soulful, toe-tapping folk music and can engage with new cultures and traditions with curiosity and respect are welcome.

I'm a beginner. Can I attend the klezmer jams?

All instruments and ALL levels are welcome. We recommend arriving by 7:30 to participate in the 'slow jam', in which one of our band members will teach a simple tune by ear. Sheet music will be available

I don't play an instrument at all! Can I attend the klezmer jams?
